WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS MODEL: I like this model because it is a modified version of traditional lectures, and is used to understand organized bodies of knowledge rather than individual facts. This model is also best used in a secondary teaching setting due to the fact that it is difficult to attract and maintain students' attention solely by lecturing
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS OF USING THIS MODEL: While it is necessary to sometimes lecture in class, it does not have to be a constant. Lectures are most effective when they are combined with other models of learning. This is because lectures are not always suited for teaching higher orders of thinking such as application, analysis, synthesis, or evaluation; for teaching motor skills, or for influencing attitudes or values.
HOW I CAN SEE MYSELF USING THIS MODEL: I can see myself using this model if I were to teach my students about how the voting system in our country works and all the different aspects of it. I would ask my students questions to gauge how much they already know on the subject. Then I would address what specific details I wanted them to learn so they understand what relationships in the lecture are more pertinent than others. Then I would would advanced organizers or strategies to connect the new material to the students previously learned knowledge.
OTHER COMMENTS/COMPARISONS:Lecture-Discussion Model is used to help students see different or new perspectives on topics and to give students multiple sources of information that may not be readily available to them.
One of the strengths of this lesson plan was that they were very detailed in their description of what they planned to do with the students. I could have easily picked up this lesson plan and taught it to a class without hesitation or questioning.
One of the weaknesses was that in the lesson plan, the teacher expected them to do a creative writing assignment and do homework on it. While one of these is good enough to assess the students, they did both, which could overwhelm their students.
The teacher deviates from the model under the Placement Activity in section (I). They want to have students choose a group "spokesperson" to read aloud the group's definition. While this is a deviation from the model, the teacher stll opened the class up with a discussion and implemented the lesson very well and affectively.
One of the strengths of this lesson plan was that is helped students understand not only concepts, but how they are related as well. This teacher also actively involved students by using comprehension monitoring and questioning.
One of the weaknesses was that in the lesson plan, the teacher expected them to do a creative writing assignment where students write a letter describing what life and politics are like in the united States, and have them describe how they perceive human rights to be in the nation of their "pen pal." Then afterwards have students write a short essay that evaluates American democracy. Have them describe the strengths and weaknesses of American democracy in comparison with other nations around the world.
The teacher deviates from the model by giving the students more groupwork. Lecture-Discussion Model is meant to put learners in passive roles and does not allow for social interaction. While groupwork does motivate students, the teacher can motivate students using the Lecture-Discussion Model by asking them questions, not only on the new topic, but on related previously learned topics too. The model also can motivate students by connecting previously learned knowledge to knew new topics so that students understand the relationship between lectures given.
